A Plea for Improved HMPV Diagnosis, Treatment, Prevention, and Management Strategies
HMPV is a highly contagious respiratory virus that affects people of all ages. HMPV was first identified in 2001, and since then, it has been reported in numerous countries worldwide. The virus is highly contagious and can spread quickly through close contact with an infected person, contaminated surfaces, and airborne transmission.
These are the age-related symptoms of HMPV: runny nose, coughing, sneezing, fever, wheezing, and shortness of breath. Despite the severity of HMPV, there is currently no vaccine available to prevent infection. Treatment for HMPV is primarily focused on relieving symptoms and supporting the body's immune system. This may include rest and hydration, over-the-counter medication to relieve symptoms, and antiviral medications in severe cases.
How can we protect against HMPV? Frequent hand washing, avoiding close contact with infected people, disinfecting and cleaning surfaces, and not sharing personal items or utensils are all recommended.
I implore the government, the public health community, and individuals to act now to combat the escalating problem of HMPV. By raising their knowledge of it and its signs, improving HMPV case reporting and surveillance, and creating and disseminating efficient vaccines and therapies, and putting infection control methods into practice in communities and healthcare settings.
