Deforestation

Deforestation is bad because it contributes to air pollution, loss of biodiversity, and changes in weather patterns. Deforestation clears large numbers of trees that absorb carbon dioxide and turn it into oxygen. This increases the number of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and affects the temperature and rainfall. Deforestation also destroys the habitat of many animals and plant species, some of which are unknown to us. This threatens their survival and the balance of the ecosystem.

Forests are cleared, or even disturbed, they release carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Forest loss and damage are the cause of around 10% of global warming. There's simply no way we can fight the climate crisis if we don't stop deforestation. We need to protect forests now more than ever. Deforestation is a particular concern in tropical rainforests because these forests are home to much of the world's biodiversity. For example, in the Amazon around 17% of the forest has been lost in the last 50 years, mostly due to forest conversion for cattle ranching. As the world seeks to slow the pace of climate change, preserve wildlife, and support more than eight billion people, trees inevitably hold a major part of the answer.

Yet the mass destruction of trees deforestation continues, sacrificing the long-term benefits of standing trees for the short-term gain of fuel, and materials for manufacturing and construction. We need trees for a variety of reasons, not least of which is that they absorb the carbon dioxide we exhale and the heat-trapping greenhouse gases that human activities emit. As those gases enter the atmosphere, global warming increases, a trend scientists now prefer to call climate change. There is also the imminent danger of disease caused by deforestation.

An estimated 60 percent of emerging infectious diseases come from animals, and a major cause of viruses' jump from wildlife to humans is habitat loss, often through deforestation.
