Air India Flight 171

On 12 June 2025, Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner flying from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed only 32 seconds after takeoff. Both engines lost power when the fuel-control switches shifted from “run” to “cutoff”, cutting the fuel supply.

The aircraft hit the B.J. Medical College hostel in Ahmedabad. Out of 242 people onboard, 241 died, with only one passenger surviving. On the ground, 19 people were killed and 67 others were injured.

Investigators from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) found that the engines were working normally before takeoff, but once the switches were cut off, the crew could not restart them despite trying emergency actions like relighting and deploying the Ram Air Turbine.

Cockpit recordings showed confusion between the pilots—one asked, “Why did you cut off?” while the other denied doing it. So far, no technical fault or clear reason has been confirmed, and the final report is expected later.
