Status of women in Islam

Islam recognizes the status of women to be the same as that of men. Prophet Muhammad declared, "Women are the twin halves of men." The position of the mother is very much exalted in Islam. Prophet Muhammad said, "Paradise lies underneath the feet of your mother." Similarly, Prophet Muhammad clearly said, "The best among you is the one who is best towards his family." This shows how high Islam rates the position of women as a wife.

The Holy Quran openly condemns the pre-Islamic behavior when people used to bury their newly born daughters alive. Moreover, in the economic sphere, women can earn money and possess property just as men can. The best example before us is that of Hazrat Khadija who looked after the business of her father after his death. The Holy Quran says, "Men shall have the benefit of what they earn and women shall have a portion of what the parents and the near relatives leave."

The history of Islam tells us that the care of children did not prevent women from helping soldiers on the battlefield.
By giving a proper place to women, Islam encourages women to play their role in the development of society.
