Islam lays great emphasis on the dignity of labor. Allah says in the Quran that man gets what he strives for. Similarly, our last Prophet Hazrat Muhammad worked as a trader. Not only this, he also mended his shoes and clothes and did other domestic chores himself. He actively participated in the construction of the mosque in Madina. The Holy Prophet proclaimed that honest labor is a friend of Allah. Once, he gave an axe to a poor man and told him to go into the jungle and cut wood for his earning. After a few days, the poor man come to the Holy Prophet and showed honest earnings. The Holy Prophet was highly pleased and said, "This is far better than the degradation of begging, which would have been on your face, on the day of judgment."
The nation which has achieved glory has understood the importance and dignity of labor. They hate laziness. Their youth take pride in selling newspapers, clearing the roads, and becoming waiters in restaurants. They have realized that by doing so they can become independent and self-sufficient. This strong belief in the dignity of labor has made those nations develop and their achievements, especially in the fields of science and technology, are beyond imagination. Unfortunately, people in countries like ours have not yet realized the dignity of labor. Educated young people can't dream of doing manual labor. They think it is below their status to do small jobs.
This is a major cause of unemployment as well. That is why we are lagging far behind the developed countries in every field. Being Muslim and patriotic Pakistan, we should understand that everyone has to play his part if we want to make our country self-sufficient and developed. We have matchless examples of our forefathers before us and how highly they valued labor. All we need is to follow them whole heatedly.
