The decreasing trend of book reading

Undoubtedly, no one can disagree with the fact that reading is an imperative source for self-improvement. Reading various books is a great help for us to speak and write better. A man with the habit of book reading is always ready to talk about different issues and address them effectively. As was well-quoted by Ralph Waldo Emerson, " If we encounter a man of rare intellect, we should ask him what books he reads." Moreover, books are our true friends and always provide useful information. Books are the friends that always guide us rightly. Therefore, Ernest Hemingway correctly claimed, " There is no friend as loyal as a book."

Despite having infinite advantages, the habit of book reading is declining drastically, especially among youngsters. It has been observed that young educated persons are taking little and meager interest in book reading which is quite risky for prosperity and development of a nation. It seems as if reading a book is a deed of breaking a mountain with a hand or finding a needle in a huge desert. It is extremely disappointing that among thousands, book reading persons can be calculated in few numbers which is like a drop in the ocean.

According to sources, one of the very most factors of declining book reading habits is excessive use of social media. The surprising fact is that many educated people spend hours by using Facebook, Instagram, tik tok and many other social media platforms. In real terms, social media made us addicted to it. It is quite alarming that our precious hours are being spent uselessly, yet we are unaware of it. It is good to be in touch with social media partially for the sake of information, but spending a whole day with it, is definitely not a deed of wisdom.

Actually, it is a bitter fact that most of our unsolved issues solutions lie in books, but we're neglecting books constantly. We have lost our ability to counter personal as well as social matters by not being in touch with the concerned books. As it was made clear early that a man with a habit of book reading is proved to be more productive and knowledgeable as compared to that who is not used to book reading.

Thus, it is highly essential for all of us, regardless of age and qualifications, to make a strong habit of book reading. Book reading has extreme importance for better performance in life and tackling societal and other issues with a strong hand. As Margaret Fuller rightly quoted, " Today a reader, tomorrow a leader"
